Faculty members who wish to seek external funding for their projects should contact the Office of Sponsored Research for help in identifying appropriate sources. In addition to providing individual assistance and publicizing programs of general interest, the Office maintains a library of materials describing a variety of federal and private organizations. These include:
- NSF publications (Guide to Programs, published each year, the monthly Bulletin, and announcements for individual programs; NSF publications are also available electronically by downloading from NSF's Science and Technology Information System (STIS) or by electronic mail to NSF's Publications Office)
- NIH publications (Extramural Programs and the weekly Guide, which is also available electronically in the NIH-GUIDE folder of the BULLETIN program on Lucy)
- NEH publications (Overview of Endowment Programs, Division of Research Programs, Division of Education Programs)
- publications from other federal and non-federal agencies (Defense Department, Department of Agriculture, Department of Education, Fulbright, Research Corporation, ACLS, American Philosophical Society, etc.)
- privately-published grants newsletters (The Grant Advisor; ARIS Funding Reports, both the Social and Natural Sciences Report and the Creative Arts and Humanities Report; and Deadlines, published annually by the University of Wisconsin-Madison in two editions, Humanities and Social Sciences and Biological and Physical Sciences, and often made available for distribution to individual faculty members)
- a variety of books (such as Directory of Research Grants, published annually, Foundation Grants to Individuals, The Foundation Directory, and a number of foundation annual reports).
Also available are general tips (see Appendix I) for proposal-writing and copies of previously successful proposals.
Faculty members may obtain application guidelines and forms for most federal grants and fellowships from the Office of Sponsored Research. Some non-federal applications are also available, although many private sponsors ask that individual faculty request materials directly from them (sometimes accompanied by a brief project description). Faculty who wish to seek individual research project support from a foundation should first consult with the Office of Sponsored Research to ensure that such a request will not conflict with potential College initiatives at that foundation.
Faculty should also be aware of the many sources of support for research available from the College and described in the Faculty Handbook.
