Dear Alumnae and Friends of the Wellesley Students’ Aid Society,
I write once again asking for your support of Wellesley students
in these difficult times. As our staff has heard so many poignant
stories from students acutely feeling the recession’s affects,
it has given me pause to reflect on what a difference the Society
can make in one individual’s life.
When I arrived on campus more than twenty years ago, I faced culture
shock. I had never owned a car or a computer, and many students seemed
to have shiny new versions of both. Whenever I walked to the “Ville,”
I couldn’t help but compare it to the hardscrabble downtown
of my hometown, and I thought I had landed in an alternative universe.
More importantly, I felt like an outsider in ways beyond those evident
on the surface. I remember one particular dorm hallway conversation
in my first few weeks, when I revealed that I was the youngest of
ten children. In addition to the usual shocked expressions, one well-intentioned
first-year student (who became a good friend) asked me, “How
did your parents ever manage to pay for all ten of you to go to college?”
The question left me stumped. I was only the second of the ten to
attend college, and my parents did not have the means to pay for our
education. Sometimes I felt like I just did not belong at Wellesley.
The Students’ Aid Society was just the support that I needed.
Throughout my time on campus, the Society’s good works made
me feel like someone on campus “got it.” Someone understood
that I really could use extra money for books. Someone understood
that I would need a boost to be able to participate in senior week
activities – I still remember how amazed I was when I received
the Society’s gift to seniors on financial aid. Whenever I visited
the office, I was met with warmth and acceptance.
My story embodies the Society’s mission. Our staff listens
with compassion and then uses the funds you have generously donated
to help students through the financial demands of everyday life, so
that they too may stay at Wellesley and experience its many treasures.
Please help us to continue to make a difference, one student at a
time. Be assured that whether your donation is $10 or $1,000, it will
make that difference.
Please explore our site or call our office to learn more about the
Society and our important work. Thank you very much for your support.
