ENGLISH 206 - Reviewing Books, Film and Music

Taught as a seminar/workshop, this course will use models of contemporary criticism in popular media to develop a working knowledge of the theoretical, ethical and economic choices that shape arts criticism for general audiences. Students will be encouraged to develop their voices as writers. Course requirements will include attending film screenings, reading arts and culture sections of newspapers and magazines, and listening to a range of popular music in various modes.

Colin Channer is Wellesley College's Newhouse Visiting Professor in Creative Writing. His reviews and essays have appeared in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune and the Times Literary Supplement. His six major works of fiction include the novella The Girl With the Golden Shoes—"a nearly perfect moral fable" in the words of Russell Banks—and the novel Waiting In Vain, a Critic's Choice Selection of the Washington Post.
