Nixon
and the Press
Below are short clips from two of the many press conferences Nixon held. Nixon's
'Last Press Conference'
Movie clips can only be viewed from computers on the Wellesley College campus. |
Nixon's 'Last Press Conference' (November 7, 1962)
In what has often been referred to as "Nixon's last press conference," only two years after he lost the Presidential race to John F.Kennedy, Nixon conceded defeat again, this time to Edmund "Pat" Brown in the 1962 California gubernatorial contest. Nixon's animosity towards the press is evident in his famous remark, "You won't have Dick Nixon to kick around any more. Because gentlemen, this is my last press conference." Of course, it wasn't.

San Clemente Press Conference (1973)
In this interchange with the White House Press Corps at his California White House in San Clemente, Nixon seems uncharacteristically off the cuff and at ease with reporters, even as he claims to have no knowledge of his aides’ involvement in illegal activities such as ordering the Watergate break-in, bugging of the DNC., and conspiracy to violate federal election laws.
