"The
pleasure a writer knows is the pleasure of Sages. Out of non-being,
being is born; out of silence, a writer produces a song."

Writing Prizes:
The Three Generations Prize for Writing 125
Each semester, the Writing
Program awards the Three Generations Prize in Writing 125 to a student
whose work demonstrates the qualities we all strive for in our writing:
clarity; eloquence; a lively authorial presence; a strong, well articulated
argument; and a deep feeling of engagement. Student papers are nominated
for the Writing Program prize by their instructors, and winners are selected
by a panel of judges from the Writing Program.
The Prize is supported by the
Three Generations Fund, named in honor of the three generations of Wellesley
alumnae whose gift has contributed so much to the growth of the Writing
Program: Judith Stern Randal; her daughter, Judith Randal Hines; and her
mother, Sybil Cohen Stern.
Entry Requirements:
The Three Generations Prize for Writing 125 was originally formulated
to honor sustained excellence in writing and/or growth in writing over
the course of a semester. Submissions, therefore, should show both the
range and depth of a student's writing. Instructors are asked to submit
a portfolio of 12-20 pages of student's writing (usually 2-3 separate
papers).
Students must be nominated by their Writing 125 instructor for
this prize.
Instructors may nominate up to three students from each Writing
125 class for this prize.
The instructor must submit four copies of the paper to the Writing
Program Office (124 Founders) by noon on May 22, 2008 for the Spring 2008 contest. Submissions are due in paper form, with entry
blank attached.
For each portfolio, attach a cover sheet including the following
information: student's name, local address, phone, and email address;
the professor and course for which the paper was written, a brief description
of the assignment, and the date the paper was submitted.
Students who elect Writing 225 to meet the Writing Requirement
(Davis Scholars and transfer students) are also eligible for this prize.
If you have any questions, please call the Writing Program at
extension 2576 or contact Wini Wood, Director of the Writing Program.
