"What release to write so that one forgets oneself, forgets one's companion, forgets where one is or what one is going to do next -- to be drenched in sleep or in the sea. Pencils and pads and curling blue sheets alive with letters heap up on the desk."

Writing Program Overview

Wellesley's Writing Program is an interdisciplinary, interdepartmental program. Our primary course offering is Writing 125, the first-year writing course required of all entering students. The 40 or more sections of this course are taught by faculty from departments across the college who recognize the importance of writing in academic life--both their own academic lives and those of their students. Since the inception of the Writing Program in 1983, nearly half of all Wellesley faculty have taught Writing 125, many on a regular basis. With so many faculty so closely involved in first-year writing instruction, and with all students required to take Writing 125, a finely tuned "culture of writing" has evolved at Wellesley. Students and faculty alike share a common interest in, knowledge of, and commitment to fine writing in all disciplines.
