renovated boathouse as seen from Lake Waban

Wellesley was the first college in the United States to have a varsity women's crew program.

Crew has been big at Wellesley since the 19th century, when students wore sporty full-length dresses to row in rather than performance fabric body suits.

The boathouse dates to 1963 and, until now, never underwent any significant updates. Thanks to the generosity of Alice Lehmann Butler ’53 and her husband, John Butler, the boathouse on Lake Waban was fully renovated. Alice, who was an avid member of her dorm crew, and her husband are both lifelong fitness enthusiasts. Their gift enables the enhancement of campus activities and supports PERA initiatives.

We look forward to Alice and John’s visit to campus on September 25-26, 2015 for the dedication of the “Butler Boathouse.”
