COURSE: My favorite class
at Wellesley was a Victorian Novel Research
Seminar (ENG 385) taught
by Professor Lisa Rodensky. Each student chose her
own Victorian novel to study for the entire semester; I chose
Elizabeth
Gaskell’s Wives & Daughters. I examined
the transmission, the historical influences, and the reception
of the novel and
explored the life of Elizabeth Gaskell. The class culminated
with me writing a critical introduction for Wives and Daughters.
ACADEMIC
PERSPECTIVES: I
love that literature is a national language that reflects the nation’s
people at a certain moment in history. It speaks to the social,
political, or religious views of a group of people
and reflects upon the culture’s ideals. Literature
is either a way of causing a revolution or a way of uniting
people, both
creating change.
I love that no matter what I have been interested in – from
literature to computer science or economics to astronomy – that
Wellesley has the facilities and staff to accommodate my
academic
interests. In my Personal Finance course, we were able to have
two professors,
one who actually lives in Hawaii. She is a Wellesley graduate
who did very well for herself in the world of finance,
and had a lot of valuable insight to offer into the course. Each
class
period, video and voice were streamed into the classroom,
which created a dynamic learning atmosphere.
The Computer
Science
Department, although small, has a lot of elite programs
and a diverse selection of courses that have allowed me to dabble
with
website design, animation, programming, and Java. The benefit
of a liberal arts and sciences education is that I get
to experience classes
in numerous fields, while feeling highly educated in one
area of expertise.
STUDY
ABROAD: I
think that one of the best opportunities that Wellesley offers
is the chance to study
abroad. I spent my summer at Oxford,
which allowed me to travel around England, Scotland,
and Ireland. It
was one of the most enriching experiences of my life
because I not only got to study in a different country, but also
got to be immersed in a culture that I absolutely fell in love
with. Oxford was
fabulous because I got to study at the Bodleian Library,
see where Lewis Carroll wrote, and explore all the different schools.
FAVORITE
THING ABOUT WELLESLEY OR A WOMEN'S COLLEGE: The
best thing about attending a women’s college
is that I get most, if not all, my work done during
the week
because
there are fewer distractions. This allows me to have
my weekends free to go into Boston, travel along the
East
Coast, go to
the movies with friends, do community service projects,
or go shopping
on Newbury Street. Since I have a lot of free time
on the weekends, I can maintain a balance between academics
and
my personal life.
DREAM
JOB: My
dream job would be to work as the Editor-in-Chief of Martha
Stewart Living magazine. I love how the
magazine merges the
world of business with the world of domesticity,
which are two ideas
that seem to be in complete opposition in today’s
society. Immediately following graduation, I want
to work for a boutique advertising agency that will
allow me to gain experience in both
the creative and account management sides of the
advertising industry.
FUN FACT: Nicholas Sparks’
romantic novels are my favorite books to read when I am trying
to escape any form of academic
reading.
