COURSE: The
course Games of Strategy (ECON 222) gave me useful
tools to model all types of strategic decisions. It had
a lab where you played games and a project to analyze a
game theoretic situation in a movie! We learned a lot and it
was
a blast!
Another favorite was Visual Processing by Biological
Vision Systems (CS 332). Ever wondered why snake charmers move
a stick back and forth? Want to learn why and how Magic Eye pictures
work?
Does making
a fingerprint match program sound exciting? Are you fascinated
by optical illusions? If you answered yes to any of those questions,
then you would love this class too! Not only was the material
always interesting and new, but it showed exactly how computer
programming can be used to further understand and extend studies
in other disciplines such as cognitive psychology.
YOUR PERSPECTIVES ON ACADEMICS: My
major is interdisciplinary, so I always get a variety of classes!
I
like to integrate information from one subject area to another,
and that is exactly how my major is designed. My major and
minor give me the tools to look at strategic decision-making.
We all
make decisions all the time, so as I study I like to think
it is just helping me apply the information to myself and
be a better
thinker, learner, and decision-maker (and who doesn’t
want that?)!
When it comes to choosing classes and a major, I’ve always
followed the principle to do what I love and find interesting!
I think the beauty of a liberal arts college is that you
can apply any major to a job after college if you wish. One practical
tool the college provides is a Wintersession program called
Management
Basics. Business school professors and business leaders
(many of whom are alums!) come to teach, provide case studies,
and answer questions. I learned about a diversity
of opportunities, met great mentors, and discovered that
I had
passions for areas of business I had not previously considered.
This program is definitely an asset of Wellesley College!
Our Center for Work
and Service is extremely active and welcoming,
and always there to give individual attention on cover letters,
resumes, job searching, interview skills, etc!
FAVORITE THING ABOUT WELLESLEY (OR
A WOMEN’S COLLEGE): The people! Whether it’s
my teammates, hallmates, or classmates, I am always surrounded
my amazing ladies who take the mission
of "women who will make a difference in the world" to
heart. While everyone’s way of making a difference
is different, this common goal encourages and motivates
everyone else to keep
pursuing their dreams. To be honest, before coming to Wellesley
I had no idea what a women’s college really
would be like. (I admit that I even circled through a list
of colleges – places that had more guys than girls
as a criteria for
applying.) It was only after coming to Wellesley that I
understood that women don’t come here to escape the
men but rather to immerse oneself in a culture that fosters
one's
intellect, character, leadership, and passions in a manner
that a coed environment
cannot compete with. If I knew in high school how wonderful
Wellesley and women’s colleges are, my college application
process would have been easier!
ATHLETICS AT WELLESLEY: I play
on both the soccer and lacrosse teams for Wellesley. Athletics
at Wellesley
forms a family that is there to support you throughout your
four
years. Whether you want to talk about your weekend, get internship
ideas,
or a paper edited, someone will be there to help you. The
teams are composed of students who, like myself, are competitive
and want to win both on the field and in the classroom. Your
teammates
are always working hard, and that inspires you to keep pushing
as well. Being on a competitive team requires discipline,
but
it also brings much success!
Athletics continues
the mission of Wellesley by equipping athletes with necessary
leadership skills to take with you. For example, the lacrosse
team has leadership
groups where you meet up to discuss your leadership qualities
and ways to expand them. Thus, athletics at Wellesley is
also about creating winning programs with women who will be
leaders on and off the field. It’s really exciting to be
a part of this!
DREAM
JOB: CEO of a Strategic Consulting Firm!
After
graduation, I want to work in either sales and trading
or consulting before applying to business school.
