Village Life in the Dordogne
|
2007
October 18 - 26
|
This fall, join Wellesley alumnae and friends for the
chance to experience life in the Dordogne, a picturesque region in the
southwest of France. Many of France's provincial charms have been distilled
in one of Europe's most beautiful and intact medieval villages, Sarlat-la-Canéda.
Here, for one full week among the village's 14th-century cobblestone
streets, delightful cafes, and traditional market, we will discover the
rich culture, fascinating history, and rhythm of daily life in the Dordogne.
Our program offers a pleasurable
balance of historic sites, thought-provoking
lectures, and independent
exploration. We'll retrace the footsteps of Richard
the Lionheart at the castle of Beynac; explore
the labyrinth of medieval lanes of the ancient
fortified town of Domme; marvel at the prehistoric
caves of Lascaux and Rouffignac, where some of
the most important prehistoric art ever discovered
brings the past to life; and take in the dramatic
cliff-side town and medieval pilgrimage destination
of Rocamadour. Engaging seminars with knowledgeable
guides will focus on topics of regional interest,
and local residents will share their perspective
on life in this historic region.
The 100-year-old family-owned
Hôtel de la
Madeleine, our home for the week, combines traditional
provincial ambiance and warm hospitality with modern
amenities. The proprietor, Philippe Melot-a local
historian, highly regarded chef, and former town
mayor-will provide insight into the region's history
and architecture and introduce us to the culinary
wonders of Périgord's traditional cuisine.
Village Life in the Dordogne is for travelers
who know the true character of a country is often
found in its provinces, along its backroads, and
around its local market squares. Unpack only once
as we immerse ourselves in the picturesque Dordogne
region celebrated for its prehistoric caves, medieval
villages, distinctive cuisine, and traditional
culture and way of life.
