Wellesley Education Expedition

Historic Normandy and the British Isles:
Caen to Portsmouth Aboard Sea Cloud II
June 2-12, 2009

Discover historic Normandy and the British Isles on a trip with Wellesley alumnae and friends. Timed to coincide with the 65th anniversary of D-Day, this journey will commemorate the ties that have served the United States, France, and England throughout history.

Our program will be enriched by the lectures and insights of Wellesley’s dean of the college and professor of history Andrew Shennan, Dartmouth College’s Jere Daniell, professor of history emeritus, and Priscilla Roosevelt, art historian and expert on the Roosevelt and Stalin era. This shared trip with Dartmouth College and the Royal Oak Foundation offers a unique look at these historic lands.

From Deauville, we will visit key sites associated with D-Day, including the American Military Cemetery with its newly-opened visitor center. In Bayeux, we will view the Bayeux Tapestry, which depicts the events leading up to the 1066 Norman invasion of England, and in Honfleur we will wander amid the timber-framed merchants’ houses and see Impressionist works at its Boudin Museum.

We will pay homage to the countries involved in the Battle of Normandy at the Peace Museum in Caen, where we embark the elegant Sea Cloud II, sister ship of Marjorie Merriweather Post’s legendary Sea Cloud, for our six-night cruise.

We will sail to Guernsey and then travel by ferry to Sark, an island nearly forgotten by time. We enter the fortified town of St. Malo and discover nearby Mont St. Michel, spectacularly situated on a granite rock in the sea. We will cross the English Channel for a visit to St. Michael’s Mount, given to the British National Trust by the third Lord St. Levan. Then we cruise on to Dartmouth, a point of embarkation for U.S. troops during the D-Day invasion, and step ashore at Cowes on the Isle of Wight for a visit to Osborne House, a favorite summer residence of Queen Victoria. Our journey concludes in the naval port of Portsmouth.

Don’t miss the opportunity to experience this memorable voyage!

Optional London Extension: June 12–14, 2009
