Remarkable Women of Antiquity and Their Time
|
October 16-27, 2009
|
Even though the ancient world was dominated by men, there were powerful women who shaped the events of their time and influenced the course of history. Join Wellesley alumnae and friends as we journey aboard the Corinthian II in search of these women and the historic places they affected - places of peerless beauty and singular importance. Our program will be enriched by lectures and insights of Bryn Mawr’s Pamela Webb, who specializes in Greek architecture and sculpture; Mt. Holyoke’s Bettina Bergmann, an expert on Greek and Roman art; and Smith College’s Scott Bradbury, who specializes in the history of the Later Roman Empire and ancient religions.
Our journey begins in Athens, where we will visit the famed Acropolis. Next, we travel to Bodrum, Turkey, the ancient Halicarnassus, where Artemisia built the famous Mausoleum - one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
We continue on to Rhodes, home of Kallipateira, the only woman ever to attend the ancient Olympic games. After ascending Monte Smith, the site of an ancient acropolis, we will visit a restored second-century B.C. stadium, theater, and the ruins of ancient temples. Next, we will navigate the scenic Bay of Fethiye to dock at the port city of the same name. From here, we will drive to see Letoon, the shrine dedicated to Leto and her children, Apollo and Artemis.
Another highlight of our journey will be picturesque Silifke, where St. Tecla fled after persecution in her native land. We will follow the ancient pilgrims' road to St. Tecla's grotto. Nearby are the remains of a large basilica, built by Emperor Zeno in 476. We will also learn of Queen Zenobia, ruler of fabled Palmyra, who defeated a Roman force in battle and went on to invade Egypt. Our unique and memorable voyage will end in Egypt’s Alexandria, founded by Alexander the Great in the fourth-century B.C.
Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy this memorable eight-day cruise and gain a unique glimpse at the incredible women who affected the ancient world.
