Wellesley Returns to Action With a 77-66 Win Over Trinity

HARTFORD, CONN. – Sophomore Erin Johnson (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.) scored a team-high 21 points and added five assists to lead Wellesley, 5-3, past Trinity College 77-66 in a non-conference women's basketball matchup, Tuesday in Hartford, Conn. Johnson was one of four Wellesley players to score in double figures.

Trailing early at 12-4, Wellesley fought back to tie the game at 26 points a piece with 5:30 remaining and clawed its way to a slim 33-31 lead at the half and shot 60.7% from the field in the second half to earn the 77-66 victory in its first game of 2003.

Senior Kelly Grover (Westbrook, Maine) had 16 points, seven assists and six rebounds for the Blue, while classmate Christine Carbonello (Londonderry, N.H.) had 15 points, three assists and five steals shooting a blazing 6-for-9 from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Sophomore Bridget Harris (Newbury Park, Calif.) chipped in with 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Trinity was led by Rebecca Bell's 27 points, including seven three-pointers while Michelle McCaffrey chipped in with 16 points, six rebounds and four assists and Liz Bontempo added 14 points for the Bantams.

Wellesley returns to action January 9 at 7 p.m. versus Tufts.
