Wellesley’s Clare Egan Crosses Finish Line First for the NEWMAC at New England Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships


BOSTON, Mass. - Wellesley first-year Clare Egan (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) was the first NEWMAC finisher at the New England Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships in Boston on Saturday afternoon. Competing against the best Division I, II and III runners in New England, Egan placed 41st in a field of 313, covering the famed Franklin Park 5000-meter course in 18:34, a personal best and the fastest time posted by any NEWMAC runner this season.

Egan, whose time was also the 16th fastest Division III finish on the day, helped the Blue grab 32nd in a field of 46 teams with 857 points. Megan Gross (New York, N.Y.) crossed the line second for Wellesley, running the course in 20:06 to place 199th and teammate Devaja Shafer (Alameda, Calif.) was just two seconds behind as she finished in 20:08 to place 201st. Senior co-captain Rachael Blanchard (Scarborough, Maine) was on Shafer’s heels as she crossed the line at 20:10 to grabbed 205th.

Also placing in the varsity event were, Jessica Weng (Paramus, N.J.) and co-captain Elizabeth Eiseman (Scarsdale, N.Y.). Weng ran Franklin Park in 20:18 and Eiseman completed the course in 20:25 to finish 219th and 228th respectively.

Wellesley will race next Saturday at the Seven Sisters Championship. The event, hosted by Bryn Mawr, will start at 11 a.m.
