TUFTS EDGES WELLESLEY 7-5 IN SEASON OPENER

Boxscore

BOSTON, MASS. –  Dena Miller (Denver, Colorado) scored four goals to lead Tufts past Wellesley 7-5 in a non-conference lacrosse game, Thursday at Nickerson Field on the campus of Boston University. It was the season opener for both teams.

Tufts (1-0) scored the game’s first three goals as sophomore Meredith Harris (Ridgewood, N.J.) put the Jumbos on the scoreboard five minutes into the game. Harris then assisted on Willow Hagge’s (Portland, Maine) lone goal of the game less than a minute later for a 2-0 Tufts lead.

Scoring would take a break until Miller scored the first of her game-high four goals to give the Jumbos a 3-0 cushion with less than five minutes remaining in the half. Wellesley’s Laura Bender (Mattapoisset, Mass.) would cut the lead to two with an unassisted tally with 3:18 remaining in the half, but Tufts would respond with back to back goals from Miller to take a commanding 5-1 lead at the break.

In the second half, Wellesley (0-1) would roar back with three unanswered goals to bring the deficit to one at 5-4. Maxine Brownstein (Roseland, N.J.) started the second-half scoring surge for Wellesley netting her first collegiate goal 10 minutes into the second half. Sophomore Abby Baird (Gloucester, Mass.) would follow with a goal of her own on a Bender assist with 15:29 left in the game. Bender would then score her second goal of the game with 14:21 remaining to cut the Tufts lead to one at 5-4.

It was as close as the Blue would get the rest of the way however, as Tufts’ Lauren Murphy (Hingham, Mass.) and Miller each tallied goals in the final 11 minutes of action to put the game out of reach.
