Wheaton Trumps Wellesley 17-11

WELLESLEY, Mass. –  Wheaton’s Vanessa Pisano (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) and Anna Lombard (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) each scored four goals a piece to lead the Lyons past Wellesley 17-11 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference lacrosse game, Tuesday at Wellesley.

Wheaton (5-1, 2-0 NEWMAC) opened the game with five unanswered goals, including three goals in the first five minutes of the half. Wellesley (0-4, 0-1) would claw its way back into the game however with a three-goal run of its own as Laura Bender (Mattapoisset, Mass.), Maxine Brownstein (Roseland, N.J.) and Dawn Kim (Greenwich, Conn.) each tallied goals to cut the Wheaton lead to 5-3 with just over five minutes remaining.

The score would remain unchanged until the final minute of action when both teams would stagger two more goals apiece for a 7-5 Wheaton lead at the half.  Wheaton would take a 6-3 lead with 1:17 remaining on Lombard’s second goal of the game, before Wellesley first-year Casey Logan (Scituate, Mass.) would score the first of her team-high four goals with 54 seconds on the clock pulling Wellesley  to within two at 6-4. Wheaton’s Lauren Maynes (Woodstock, Vt.) would quickly counter however netting her second goal of the game with 31 seconds to go. The scoring was not done however as Logan would score her second goal in short order, nabbing a pass from Kim and netting a diving goal as time expired.

The second half opened the same as the first for the Lyons as Wheaton would rattle off five unanswered goals to take a commanding 12-5 lead with 24 minutes remaining and never looked back en route to the win.

Wheaton’s A.J. Vasiliou (Middletown, Conn.) made 15 saves in the win, while Wellesley’s Alissa Gordon (Sudbury, Mass.) played well in net turning back 13 shots.
