MCGUIGAN LEADS WELLESLEY PAST MIT 12-5

WELLESLEY, Mass. –  Lydia McGuigan (New York, N.Y.) scored three goals and passed off three assists to lead Wellesley past MIT 12-5 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women’s lacrosse game, Tuesday at Wellesley.

McGuigan was one of three Wellesley players to score three goals as Dawn Kim  (Greenwich, Conn.) and Laura Bender (Mattapoiset, Mass.) each tallied a hat-trick to pace the Blue to their second win in as many games. Wellesley is now 2-6 overall and 2-3 in the NEWMAC while MIT falls to 2-7 overall and 1-4 in conference action.

Audrey Gill (Exeter,  N.H.) scored two goals and Evelyn Redmond (Jaffrey, N.H.) netted her first collegiate goal to round out the Wellesley scoring.

MIT’s Kesley Presson (Needham, Mass.) led the Engineers with two goals, while Debbie Chang (Valley Cottage, N.Y.), Deanna Lentz (Gaithersburg, Md.) and Carri Chan (Lincoln, Mass.) chipped in with a goal each.

Up by just a goal at 5-4 heading into the halftime break, Wellesley broke open the game with two goals in the opening two minutes of the second stanza. Redmond netted Wellesley’s first goal of the second half on a pass from McGuigan with 28:36 on the clock. McGuigan quickly followed with a goal of her own just 19 second later on an assist from Kim to give the Blue a 7-4 lead.

Wellesley also turned up its defensive pressure in the second half, holding MIT to just one goal while forcing eight caused turnover in the second half. Wellesley ended the contest with 13 caused turnovers for the game.

MIT’s Hee Jay Kang (Old Tappan, N.J.) made seven saves for the Engineers while Alissa Gordon (Sudbury, Mass.) played well in goal for the Blue turning back 11 shots for the win.
