For Immediate Release WOMEN’S SOCCER RESULTS–9.7.02 Contact: Christina Cracolici Phone: (781) 283-2003 E-mail: ccracoli@wellesley.edu Wellesley and Nazareth Advance to Championship Game of 2002 Wellesley Soccer Invitational Wellesley, Mass. – Wellesley and Nazareth College each advanced to the championship game of the Fourth Annual Wellesley College Soccer Invitational with 2-1 victories Saturday in Wellesley, Mass. Nazareth defeated Simmons College while Wellesley downed William Paterson. Wellesley (1-0) used two second half goals in its season-opener to defeat William Paterson (2-2). Kat McPhail gave William Paterson a 1-0 in the 27th minute capitalizing on a Kristin Romanowski cross in the box. The Pioneers maintained the 1-0 lead until the 67th minute when Wellesley first-year Jen Marcello blasted in a one-timer to the lower left corner past an outstretched William Paterson keeper, Meaghan Koppel, for her first collegiate goal. Wellesley's Lisa Andruszkiewic was credited with the assist. With the score tied at one a piece, both keepers were on display as Wellesley's Elizabeth Senecal made a diving save in the 72nd minute, stopping a near go-ahead goal from the Pioneer's Romanowski. Koppel also game up big in the 76th minute, stopping a break-away attempt from Wellesley's Marcello. Wellesley, however, took the lead in the 79th minute on a Allison Cramer goal. Wellesley's Bridget Jones carried the ball up the left side of the field, drawing in two William Paterson defender's, before finding Cramer with a square ball in the box. Cramer settled the ball and then knocked in the go-ahead goal to the upper left corner of the net to give Wellesley the win. In the first game of the afternoon, Nazareth College (3-0) rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to push past Simmons College, 2-1. Simmons' Lesley McShea netted an unassisted goal on a 20-yard blast to the lower left corner to give the Pride a 1-0 lead at 15:55, a score which stood through the first half. Simmons falls to 0-2 on the season. Nazareth knotted up the score at 1-1 on a Jaime Snyder goal at 54:33. Snyder took a Casey Corcoran through ball and slotted in the breakaway goal. A minute later, Stephanie Nardini gave the Golden Flyers the lead with a header off of a Beth Berger assist. Simmons' Amanda Cummings played well in goal for the Pride, making several athletic saves. Cummings finished with 16 saves. Nazareth's Candace Hatcher, facing only one shot had a quiet day in net, finishing with no saves. Wellesley will face Nazareth College in Sunday's championship match at 2 p.m. while Simmons and Wiliam Paterson will play in the consolation game at noon. It is the first time since 1999 that Wellesley has advanced to the championship game of its annual invitational tournament. 1999 was also the last time that Wellesley has won.
