Wellesley Softball Edged by Springfield in NEWMAC Tournament
WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College Softball team fell
to Springfield College, 1-0, on Tuesday afternoon in the quarterfinals
of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference
Softball Championship. The Blue’s season record stands at
21-11, while Springfield improves to 22-18 overall. The Pride will
face Babson College at Babson on Saturday in Springfield’s
first game of the Double Elimination NEWMAC Championships this
weekend. WPI will play Smith in the second game of the Championships.
Keir Stanford (Melrose, Mass.) scored the game’s lone run
in the top of the second. Stanford singled and, after advancing
to second base on sacrifice bunt, Shanda Kogut (Preston, Conn.)
singled to right to plate Stanford, the game’s winning run.
Pride pitcher Stephanie Blackman (Stamford, Conn.) picked up the
win, allowing only three hits and fanning two batters. Denise Fumicello
(Brockton, Mass.) and Kogut led the Springfield offense with two
hits apiece.
Jenna Harvey (London, Ontario) took the loss for Wellesley. Harvey
struck out eight batters and gave up five hits. Meghan Sullivan
was 2-for-3 on the day with a double. Harvey also singled in the
loss.
