ATHLETIC TRAINING/SPORTS MEDICINE

INTERNSHIPS

Purpose:

  • This program provides a hands-on opportunity for students interested in pursuing medicine as a career.  These students volunteer in the athletic training room under the direction of the certified athletic trainers and have an opportunity to observe our comprehensive sports medicine program in action.  This program involves all aspects of the prevention, recognition, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries to Wellesley’s varsity student-athletes, including on-campus visits by our team physician and orthotic technician.
  • Student interns are also presented the opportunity to learn basic injury management skills.  These include:  first aid, protective taping, treatment methods, and basic rehab programs.  Past interns have said that the internship allowed them practical application of the skills that they learned in class and that it was a great review of human anatomy.

  • The time commitment is approximately 4 hours per week, but schedules can be flexible.  Normal operating hours are 1pm-6pm Monday-Friday, with weekend and evening observation opportunities available as well.  Normally an intern will be scheduled for two 2-hour shifts or one 4-hour shift per week.  This is a volunteer opportunity so students are free to opt out of the program if they decide it is not for them.
  • The program also acts as a recruitment tool for our very popular student athletic training aide (SATA) program.  We select SATA’s for employment from the pool of interns each year for the following school year.  Interns are eventually hired based on the quality of their work, their availability, the level of commitment they are able to make to the athletic training program, and their success during an interview.  The number of positions available will vary each year, which makes this a very competitive job experience.  Even though some interns may not be interested in becoming a student athletic training aide, they may gain valuable insight into the field of sports medicine.
