When a student-athlete decides to participate in intercollegiate athletics at Wellesley College, there are several steps to complete in order to be considered “medically cleared” for participation.

  • All new student-athletes must complete a pre-participation exam with the athletic training staff.  A pre-participation exam consists of a medical history review and an exam of the major joints of the body.  Although this is NOT a true physical examination, it gives the athletic training staff a baseline of information related to muscular strength and flexibility, as well as, joint stability and strength.  As part of the pre-participation exam process, the student-athlete will fill out the appropriate medical forms, as well as, provide a photocopy of both sides of their current insurance card for their medical record.  Once these requirements have been met, the student-athlete will be considered cleared for practices.
  • All student-athletes must be cleared by Wellesley’s Health Services before the first intercollegiate contest (including scrimmages).  In most cases, student-athletes will be cleared after a review of their medical records, without having to see a clinician at Health Services.  In some cases after reviewing their medical forms, the Health Services staff may contact a student-athlete for follow-up.  This follow-up may consist of a physical exam or telephone call. Student-athletes must comply/respond in a timely manner to be cleared for competition.  Returning student-athletes in their sophomore or senior years (and new upper class student-athletes) are required to make an appointment with Health Services for a physical exam with one of the clinicians prior to the first competition.

Student-athletes should keep the athletic training staff updated at all times with regard to injury status, medication changes/additions, insurance changes, etc.
