September 13th, 2008 Against Smith College

Today the 4-time defending NEWMAC Champion Blue started their title defense with a strong 9-0 win over fellow 7 sister rival Smith College.  The charge was lead by senior co-captain Jen Schwarzkopf (Hinsdale, IL) who teamed up with junior Mohona Siddique (Chevy Chase, MD) to take an 8-1 win at number 1 doubles.  Jen then stepped on court at the number 2 singles position and fund herself in a battle the first three games of the first set.  After that, she trounced Nawal Mays of Smith without losing another game, 6-1, 6-0.

First years Marie Watanabe (Houston, TX) and Grace Cheng (Columbia, MD) started off a bit shaky from nerves of their first college match, yet showed why they are a team to look out for with a strong 8-3 victor at number 2 doubles.  Marie found her groove early in the singles match against Smith’s talented Diana Fiumefreddo taking the first set 6-1.  The second set started off close, but with great variety, Marie was able to finish the job and come away with a 6-1, 6-1 win.

In perhaps the most competitive match of the day, Jacqueline Shen (Calgary, Alberta, CA) found herself playing Mindy Chu who was up for the challenge.  With Jacqueline’s slice backhand, she was able to break down the feisty Chu, and pull out the 6-1, 6-2 Victory.

The Blue will next be in action next Saturday against Clarke at 1pm in Worcester.  Come out and support the team!
