September 30th, 2008 Against Wheaton College
The Wellesley College tennis team had a solid 8-1 victory over previously unbeaten Wheaton College Tuesday night inside the field house on the Wellesley Campus to improve to 3-0. The day started off outside where the Blue took 2 of 3 doubles which was lead by a dominating performance from Malika Hayashi and Nat Herman. After getting to 2-2 in the match, they won the next 6 games to win 8-2. Grace Cheng and Marie Watanabe were the other winners, beating the team of Diorio and Knies 8-0. The number 1 team of Geocaris and Teague bested the Blue duo of Schwarzkopf and Siddique 8-4.
After the doubles matches, the rains came and forced the match inside where Shivani Saxena took charge and quickly dismissed Diorio 6-2, 6-2. With great direction changes and finishes at the net, she was able to rebound from her tough loss to Vassar’s number 1 this weekend. Junior Co-Captain Meghan Stubblebine made her return to the lineup at number 5, and found her serve rhythm and was able to dominate early and keep up the intensity for a solid 6-1, 6-3 routing of Knies.
The two best matches of the night were at the top of the lineup as Jen Schwarzkopf and Marie Watanabe both pulled out 3 set matches at number 1 and 2 respectively. Watanabe at 1 was able to come back after losing a close first set tie-breaker to pull out the third set match tie breaker 10-4. Geocaris last year went 17-4, with one of those loses to Welleley’s Trish Devine, so it looks like the Blue has her number. Schwarzkopf who came back from a 4-1 deficit in the first set to pull it out 7-5, was able to withstand Teague’s massive forehand and awesome slice to pull out the third set match tie-breaker 10-7. Jen, again, showed how much of a competitor she is as she was down 6-7 after being up 6-2. She was able to tighten up the errors, and maintain total focus and intensity to win the last 4 points.
The Blue will be back in action again on Homecoming weekend here at Wellesley on Saturday at 1pm when they face off against Mount Holyoke. Come out and watch us play, there should be food throughout the campus for friends and family and many other games to watch as well.
