Wellesley Crew Wins NEWMAC Sportsmanship Award, Coach of the Year

WELLESLEY, Mass. - The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) this week announced its Women's Rowing postseason awards for 2008.  Wellesley College received the NEWMAC Sportsmanship Award, voted on by the NEWMAC teams, and head coach Tessa Spillane was named the NEWMAC Coach of the Year.

In addition, Wellesley had three selections to the All-Conference team: varsity rowers Juliana Martinez (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Jacqueline Lewandowski (Chicago, Ill.), and novice coxswain Hannah Woodruff (Longmeadow, Mass.).  It is the first nomination for all three.

The Blue captured Wellesley's first Florence Smith Cup last weekend in Worcester, edging Mount Holyoke by two points.  All four boats in the event turned in strong performances: the third varsity and first novice boats claimed victories, and the first and second varsity boats each took third-place finishes.

Wellesley Crew returns to the water Saturday to race Tufts, Smith and Simmons on the Malden River.
