Wellesley Fencing Falls to Brandeis in Dual Meet Action
WELLESLEY, MA – The Wellesley College fencing team fell to Brandeis University in dual meet action on Wednesday night in Wellesley. The Blue picked up a win in Epee, but Brandeis got victories in both Sabre and Foil to take the match 19-8.
In Epee, Brandeis took an early 4-1 lead but Wellesley battled back to take the remaining four bouts to record a 5-4 victory. Emily Johnson (Pittstown, NJ) picked up three wins for the Blue while Annmarie Kocab (Farmington Hills, MI) and Ann Benjamin (Fairfield, CT) each won a bout.
In the Foil competition, Brandeis won the first seven matches before Wellesley closed with wins from Hannah Braaten (Concord, MA) and Wendy Chin (New York, NY). Despite closing strong, the Judges’ took the weapon 7-2.
Brandeis sealed the dual meet victory with an 8-1 win in sabre. Wellesley got a win from Crystal Aiken (Eden, NC) in the final bout of the weapon, but it wasn’t enough as Brandeis outlasted Wellesley with a team score of 19-8.
The win improves the Judges’ to 10-4 on the season, while Wellesley’s record evens at 4-4. The Blue will next be in action on Saturday as they host the 2008 Wellesley Invitational. Action begins at 9:00am in the Field House.
