WELLESLEY, Mass. - The Wellesley College fencing team claimed their home invitational title with commanding wins over Hunter College and the University of Massachusetts. The sweep evens the Blue's overall record at 5-5.
Wellesley was undefeated in foil competition with sophomores Wendy Chin (New York, NY), Hannah Braaten (Concord, MA) and Tess Delean (St. Louis, MO) recording six wins apiece on the day. The trio allowed a total of only five touches in their nine bouts against Hunter, and seven of nine bouts against UMass were decided by a 5-0 or 5-1 score.
In the epee events, the Blue beat UMass by a 7-2 margin and Hunter 8-1, led by six wins from Emily Johnson (Pittstown, NJ). Anne Benjamin (Fairfield, CT) won five bouts and Ashley Paquin (Cumberland, RI) four.
The Blue dropped 6-3 decisions to both teams in sabre competition. Amy Allport (Frankenmuth, MI) and Elizabeth Rowen (Santa Cruz, CA) each won two bouts on the day to lead the sabreists.
Wellesley next competes at the Northeast Conference Meet, to be hosted by Tufts University on Saturday, February 7th.
