Wellesley Fencing Wins New England Foil Championship

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - The Wellesley College fencing team completed an outstanding New England Fencing Championship with a first-place finish in foil and a second place finish in epee. As a team, the Blue placed 4th overall

competing on Sunday against 14 schools. The event was hosted by Mount Holyoke College.
The Wellesley foil squad continued to assert their dominance in New England, taking the gold medal for the second straight year. Individually, all three Wellesley foil fencers advanced to the final round of 12. Wendy Chin (New York, NY) won third place overall while Hannah Braaten (Concord, MA) took 6th place overall. Tess DeLean (St. Louis, MO) also had a solid showing for the Blue, finishing 12th overall.
The Wellesley epee squad improved upon last year's third place finish by taking the silver medal this year. First-year Ashley Paquin (Cumberland, RI) finished tied for first, but fell in the fence-off to solidify a silver medal. Junior Emily Johnson (Pittstown, NJ) and sophomore Anne Benjamin (Fairfield, CT) also advanced to the final round, taking 10th and 11th places.
In sabre, Wellesley took 12th place in the squad standings. First-year Elizabeth Rowan (Santa Cruz, CA) advanced to the finals, finishing eighth overall.
Rounding out the accolades for Wellesley, Emily Johnson earned First-Team All-Star honors.
The Blue are back in action competing at the NCAA Regional Championship at MIT on March 8th at 8:00am. Six Wellesley fencers have qualified for the event, including: Hannah Braaten, Wendy Chin, Tess DeLean, Emily Johnson, Anne Benjamin and Ashley Paquin.
