Wellesley Field Hockey Nets Four All-Region Selections
WELLESLEY, MA – Four Wellesley field hockey players were named today to the 2007 Longstreth/NFHCA Division III All-Region Team. The four nominations are the most for the Blue since the 2002 season.
Representing Wellesley in the New England East Region, Callie Lekas (Brewster, Mass.) and Katie Sang (Cupertino, Calif.) were named to the first team, and Katie Frett (Hallowell, Maine) and Emily Hewitt (Alexandria, Va.) were second-team selections. All four make their first appearance on an All-Region Team.
Lekas, a sophomore forward, led the team in scoring with 14 goals and 10 assists (38 points.) She also netted four game-winning goals during the season, and was ranked in the NEWMAC and Division III in goals, assists and points.
Sang, a junior midfielder, collected 13 points on two goals and nine assists. Her assist total placed her third in the NEWMAC and 20th in Division III this year.
Frett, a first-year forward, was also named the 2007 NEWMAC Rookie of the Year. She scored seven goals in her first collegiate season, including the game-winner in overtime against WPI.
Hewitt, a junior goalkeeper, recorded 10 shutouts this season, placing her first in the NEWMAC and fourth in the nation. She also ranked 12th nationally with a goals-against average of 0.97.
The Wellesley field hockey team posted an overall record of 13-6 (6-2 in the NEWMAC) and advanced to the conference championships before dropping the title game to Springfield.
