Wellesley Soccer Drops Season Opener to Gordon

Box Score

WENHAM, Mass. – A late first half goal by Nicole Lembo led the Gordon College soccer team to a 1-0 win over visiting Wellesley College on Thursday night. Lembo scored with just over a minute left in the first half to provide all the scoring needed for the Fighting Scots.

Wellesley sophomore goalkeeper Katie Martore (Great Falls, VA) had a busy first half, saving six shots in the first 43 minutes including back-to-back close range attempts in the 22nd minute. The game remained scoreless until Lembo dribbled in from 15 yards, faked a defender and launched the game-winner into the top right side of the net.

In the second half, the Blue saw all of their scoring opportunities knocked away managing only three shots on goal.

Overall, Gordon out shot Wellesley 27-9 including 12 shots to Wellesley’s two in the first half of play.

In goal for Gordon, Abby Ytzen made five stops while Wellesley’s Martore finished with 10 saves on the night.

With the win, Gordon improves to 3-0 on the season and will next face Regis College on at home on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

The loss drops Wellesley to 0-1 on the season. The Blue will be back in action this weekend hosting the Wellesley Invitational on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s action begins at 12:00 p.m. with Wellesley taking on Simmons College.
