WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College Swimming and Diving team opened the 2007-2008 season with a win at Wellesley’s 11th annual Betty Spears Relays. The Blue won every event en route to a team victory with 350 points, nearly three times that of closest competitor Westfield State.
Wellesley was led by junior Carolyn O’Hara (Bedford, NH) and senior Jenny Wu (Livingston, NJ) who each took part in five winning relay teams. O’Hara swam on the winning 300-Back and 400-Medley teams and was also part of winning freestyle relay teams competing at 200, 400 and 800 yards. Wu was a member of the victorious 300 Breast, 800-Free, 200/400-Medley, and 400 IM teams.
Also leading the way for Wellesley, junior diver Kate Sorensen (Bolton, MA) won both the 1 and 3 meter diving events. In the 1-meter event, Sorensen tallied 246.70 points an NCAA-qualifying score, besting the second place finisher by 29 points. At 3-meters, her score of 240.10 was 22 points better than the nearest competitor.
Wellesley will return to the water a week from today when the Blue travel to Plymouth State at 1:00pm for their first dual meet of the season.
