WELLESLEY, MA – Wellesley College first year swimmer Catherine Poon (McLean, VA) recorded an NCAA “B” cut time while classmate Alex Simas (Bellevue, WA) set a school record, but it wasn’t enough as the Blue fell to Tufts University on Wednesday evening in dual meet action at Chandler Pool.  The Jumbos took the meet 161-133.

The Blue jumped out to the early lead with a win in the 200-yard medley relay.  After Tufts won the next three events to take a 45-29 lead, Wellesley came back with wins from Wu, Gram and Poon to take the next three and go ahead by a score of 71-60.

Wu’s win came in the 100-breast after recording a time of 1:10.49 while Gram took top honors in the 200-fly finishing in a time of 2:18.39. Poon’s time of 24.32 in the 50-free gave her the win in the event while also qualifying as the fourth-best time in NCAA Division III this season.

Tufts regained the lead with a win from sophomore Meredith Cronin (Foxboro, MA) in the 200-yard backstroke and never looked back as the Jumbos came out on top 161-133.

In the diving events, Tufts got two wins from senior Kendall Swett (Akron, OH).  In the 1-meter event she finished with a score of 288.67 while in the 3-meter event she scored a 276.76.  Both scores surpassed NCAA-qualifying marks. For Wellesley, junior diver Kate Sorensen (Bolton, MA) took second in both the 1 and 3 meter diving events, hitting NCAA marks in both.

For Wellesley, Simas took first in the 1000-free breaking a six-year-old school record with a time of 10:45.92.  The Blue also got wins from Gram in the 100-yard fly, Wu in the 200-yard breaststroke and the team of Poon, Dana Dutton (Anacortes, WA), Carolyn O’Hara (Bedford, NH), and Savanna Johnson (Bloomington, IN) in the 200-free relay.

Up next for Tufts (2-0), the Jumbo’s will compete at the MIT Invitational on Friday beginning at 7:00 pm.  Wellesley (2-2) will travel to the Camel Invite this weekend with Saturday’s session beginning at 10:30am.
