Wellesley Tennis Players Earn All-Conference Honors
Babson Park, MA – The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) recently announced its Women's Tennis Post-Season awards for 2007. Regular season and tournament champion Wellesley College led the way with five First Team and three Second Team selections; league runner-up MIT followed with three First Team and four Second Team selections.
MIT Sophomore Leslie Hansen, last season's NEWMAC Rookie of the Year, was named the 2007 NEWMAC Athlete of the Year. She was also named to the First Team at number one singles. Wellesley First-Year Shivani Saxena (Milan, Italy) was named NEWMAC Rookie of the year and made the First Team at number three singles. In addition, Wellesley Coach Christine Franek was named NEWMAC Coach of the Year and Wellesley captured the league's Sportsmanship Award.
Joining Saxena on the First Team from Wellesley were senior Trish Devine (Westport, Mass.) at number two, first-year Jacqueline Shen (Calgary, Alberta, CA) at number four, sophomore Meghan Stubblebine (Bridgeville, Penn.) at number five and sophomore Mohona Siddique (Chevy Chase, Md.) at number six.
Named to the second team for Wellesley was junior Jen Schwarzkopf (Hinsdale, IL) who earned the honors at number one singles. Joining Schwarzkopf on the second team were Wellesley's top two doubles teams. At the number one flight, Schwarzkopf and Devine were honored, while at number two, the team of Hali Walther (Navarre, FL) and Shen were named All-Conference.
