Schwarzkopf/Shen Named NEWMAC Doubles Team of the Week

WELLESLEY, MA – The Wellesley College doubles tennis team of Jennifer Schwarzkopf (Hinsdale, IL) and Jacqueline Shen (Calgary, Alberta, CA) was named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Team of the Week for the period ending October 21, 2007.

Schwarzkopf and Shen advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2007 New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament in the number one doubles flight over the weekend. The pair advanced with an 8-2 win over Wesleyan’s number ones in the round of 32 and then an 8-6 win over Middlebury’s number ones in the round of 16.
In the quarterfinals, Schwarzkopf and Shen met up with the defending NCAA Division III Doubles Champions, Alicia Menezes and Brittany Berckes and nearly pulled off an upset. The Wellesley pair held strong but eventually fell in a tight 8-6 match.

The Wellesley tennis team finished the regular season with a stellar 8-1 record, including a 7-0 mark in the NEWMAC.  The Blue will next be in action as hosts of the NEWMAC Championships this Saturday and Sunday.  As the top seed in the tournament, Wellesley received a first round bye and will take on the winner of Smith and Wheaton on Saturday at 2:00 pm for a chance to advance to Sunday’s championship match.
