Wellesley Tennis Downs MIT; Move to 5-0
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In a battle of unbeaten conference foes, Wellesley College emerged with a 6-3 victory over MIT in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match on Tuesday. With the loss, the Engineers’ record dipped to 5-2 on the year and 4-1 in conference play while the Blue improved to 5-0 overall and in the NEWMAC.
Leslie Hansen and Anastasia Vishnevetsky put MIT on the board with an 8-1 win over Jen Schwarzkopf and Mohonna Siddique in the top doubles spot. Marie Watanabe and Grace Cheng evened the match by defeating Anisa McCree and Melissa Diskin, 8-1, in the next position. Wellesley captured the lead courtesy of Meghan Stubblebine and Dara Azuma’s 8-6 decision over Karina Pikhart and Yi Wang.
In singles action, Hansen fell to Watanabe, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, as Vishnevetsky topped Schwarzkopf, 6-4, 6-3. Stubblebine defeated Diskin, 6-4, 6-0, in the No. 3 slot, while Yang registered a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Nathalie Herman. Wellesley gained some breathing room with wins in the No. 5 and No. 6 positions. Siddique posted a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Alex Hall as Cheng beat McCree, 6-2, 6-0.
The Blue posted a sweep of the exhibition matches, with Anjalee Martin and Nathalie Herman collaborating for an 8-6 win against Hall and Jen Rees. Malika Hayashi held off Pikhart, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, while Martin edged out Rees, 6-1, 7-5.
Both squads will continue conference play on Saturday, Oct. 11. MIT will travel to Smith College while Wellesley will host Springfield College.
