Wellesley's Marie Watanabe Named NEWMAC Tennis Player of the Week

BABSON PARK, Mass. –  Wellesley College first-year Marie Watanabe (Houston, TX) was named the New England Women's and Men's Athletics Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Tennis Singles Player of the Week for the second straight week.

Watanabe went 2-0, defeating two nationally ranked players at number one singles for Wellesley. In a 6-3 victory over NEWMAC-rival MIT, the first-year was a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 winner over #8 Leslie Hansen. Against Williams (the defending National Champions), Watanabe defeated Cary Gibson, the number-two player in the country 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Overall, Watanabe is 6-0 in dual matches this season.

Watanabe is now 6-0 on the season in dual singles matches and 9-1 overall.  Her only collegiate loss came in the ITA Regional Tournament where she advanced to the quarterfinal round before falling to Tuft's Julia Browne.

Wellesley tennis is 6-1 on the season with their only loss coming to Williams.  The Blue will next be in action on Tuesday with a 3:00pm match at Babson.
