Wellesley Tennis Players Win All-Conference Awards;
Watanabe Named NEWMAC Player of the Year

BABSON PARK, Mass. – The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) announced its 2009 Women's Tennis post-season awards on Tuesday. Regular season co-champion Wellesley College led the way with five first team selections, highlighted by the 2009 NEWMAC Player of the Year, Marie Watanabe (Houston, TX).

Watanabe, Jacqueline Shen (Calgary, Alberta, Canada), Nathalie Herman (San Francisco, CA) and Meghan Stubblebine (Cumming, GA) each recieved first-team All-Conference selections in singles.  Watanabe and Stubblebine also earned first-team all-conference in doubles.

Watanabe, the 2008 NEWMAC Rookie of the Year, is the 35th ranked singles player in the nation. The sophomore posted six wins this fall in the #1 singles spot, earning her second All-Conference nod in two seasons.

In doubles, Watanabe paired up with senior Meghan Stubblebine to earn first team All-Conference in the second position.  The duo went undefeated in conference play, recording five wins, while only allowing their opponents three total points.

Junior Jacqueline Shen earned her third All-Conference selection, representing Wellesley in the #3 singles spot this year.  She went a perfect 8-0 against conference opponents, winning every set in NEWMAC play.

Nathalie Herman earns her second-straight first-team All-Conference nod.  The junior posted a 6-1 record against NEWMAC opponents, including a come-from-behind 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 over Wheaton's Katherine Knies in the NEWMAC Championship.

Stubblebine wrapped up the post-season awards for Wellesley, with a first-team selection at #5 singles. A first-team selection in 2006 and 2007, she was dominant in conference play this season, winning every set en route to a 7-0 record against NEWMAC opponents.
