Tennis Competes at ITA Regional Championships This Weekend

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Four members of the Wellesley College tennis team wrapped up play at this weekend's ITA New England Championship. Representing the Blue at the three-day event were Marie Wantanabe (Houston, TX), Mohona Siddique (Chevy Chase, MD), Jacqueline Shen (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) and Nathalie Herman (San Francisco, CA).
In singles, Wantanabe and Shen won their opening round matches with Wantanabe recording a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kelsey Semrod of Trinity and Shen notching a win against Mount Holyoke's Nahree Han, 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the round of 32.
In the round of 32, Shen ended her singles play with a tough 6-4, 6-4 loss to Bowdoin's Kellen Alberstonge.
Wantanabe won a convincing 6-0, 6-0 match against Maile Macleod of Simmons to advance to the round of 16 where she fell 6-1, 6-1 to second-seeded Emily Lombardi.
In doubles,
Siddique and Shen made an impressive run to the semifinals of the tournament. In the opening round they defeated the Vassar pair of Beckerman/Block 8-3 and then won a nailbiter against Tuft's Katz/Stewart, 9-7, in the round of 16.
In the doubles quarterfinals, the Wellesley duo defeated the 5th-seeded Hoerner/Lombardi of Bowdoin, 8-4. The third-seeded pair of French/Baljon of Williams ended Siddique and Shen's run in the semifinals, handing them a hard-fought 8-5 loss.
Wellesley tennis returns to dual meet action on Saturday, September 26th hosting a 1:00pm NEWMAC match against Clark University.
