Cummings Tallies 14 Kills in 3-0 Win Over Gordon

Box Score

WELLESLEY, MA – Junior outside hitter Alice Cummings (Tallahassee, Fla.) racked up 14 kills in tonight's season opener, leading Wellesley volleyball to a 3-0 win over Gordon College.  The Blue stand at 1-0 on the year, while Gordon  drops to 1-3.

Set one opened with Wellesley breaking away to a short-lived 8-4 lead.  Gordon tied the game at 8-8 on aggressive serving from Leah Chamberlain (Canton, Mass.), before edging to a 12-10 advantage.  But the Blue bounced back with a run of their own, when Cummings scored repeatedly down the line.  Wellesley opened a 17-15 lead and held on for a 25-19 win.

In set two, Wellesley once again jumped out early, taking a 7-3 lead on Emily Peters' (Temescal Valley, Calif.) serve.  This time, however, the Blue maintained their momentum and cruised to a 25-14 win.   Set three followed the same script, as Wellesley scored points in bunches to open a solid 16-8 lead before sealing the match with a convincing 25-16 win.

Blakely Burns (Laguna Beach, Calif.) led the Fighting Scots with seven kills and 11 digs.  Meredith Phipps (Sandy, Utah) tallied six kills, while Janelle Corasaro (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) chipped in 12 digs.  Kristin Klein (San Fernando, Calif.) guided the Gordon offense, dishing out 15 assists in the loss.

Cummings led the Blue with 14 kills, 13 digs and one block.  Jessica Duff (Milton, Abingdon, UK) added ten kills and nine blocks.  Peters anchored the backrow for Wellesley, tallying 14 digs, while Victoria Peng (Diamond Bar, Calif) distributed 27 assists.

Gordon will next travel to Waterville, Maine on Friday to play Plymouth State in the Colby Invitational. Wellesley returns to action this weekend at Wesleyan University. The Blue will battle Williams at 11:00 am on Saturday and return to the court to play the hosts at 2:00 pm that afternoon.
