The Trasimeno Archaeological Project: Uncovering a Roman Villa in Central Italy

Wednesday, September 9, 2021

Rebecca Schindler, Professor of Classical Studies at DePauw University (Wellesley '91), will present recent discoveries from her archaeological project in Umbria. Rebecca directs the The Trasimeno Archaeological Project, which is investigating a Roman Villa dating from the 2nd century BCE to the late 3rd century CE in the region of Castiglione del Lago, on the western side of Lago Trasimeno. Although this territory lies between the important ancient cities of Perugia, Chiusi, and Cortona, this is the first  excavation of a Roman site in the region.

An overarching research question is to understand the role that this Villa played in the Romanization of Central Italy during the late Roman Republic in regard to the local environment, trade networks, and the material culture of the region. So far, excavation has revealed a bath house with a partially preserved heating system (hypocaust) and a monumental hall with water features, perhaps used for dining (nymphaeum), suggesting that by the early imperial period the owners of the Villa were wealthy and desired to display their connections to the imperial center in Rome. This project is field school through a partnership with the Umbra Institute in Perugia, Italy, and welcomes the participation of undergraduates.cca Schindler, Professor of Classical Studies at DePauw University (Wellesley '91), will present recent discoveries from her archaeological project in Umbria.
