Exploring the Field
There are many ways to gain insight into careers in government and public service. The following are just some of the ways that you can gain knowledge that will help you to decide if you would like to pursue a career in this sector.
- Research the three branches of government (executive, legislative, and judicial) and specific offices within each branch for the types of opportunities available in each branch. Utilize the CWS Library resources and the Web resources found within this portion of the site.
- Participate in the CWS Self-Assessment Workshops to explore and solidify your career interests and goals. For more information go to the MyCWS to view the CWS Events Calendar.
- Visit the academic departments and programs that are most closely aligned with the public sector. For example, the Political Science Department and the International Relations and Peace and Justice Studies programs are likely to have information on courses that will broaden and deepen your preparation for a career in government and public service.
- Create a Shadow experience.
- Search the W Network to find alumnae who work in the public sector and perhaps even in the specific office that interests you. Students can access the W Network online and can find assistance with registering, if needed, in the CWS Library.
- Apply for the Washington Internship Program sponsored by the Political Science Department and for the CWS Identified Internships and CWS Stipend Programs and other departmental internship programs.
- Participate in community service and volunteer activities, as well as in on-campus organizations that will allow you to experience aspects of careers in government and public service.
- Stop by the CWS for a ten-minute drop-in session, or schedule a longer appointment with a counselor to discuss more in-depth issues regarding career aspirations.
