Wellesley College Information for Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship
Applicants for a Goldwater Scholarship must go through the Wellesley College screening process. This entails submission of the following preliminary application material to the Center for Work and Service (CWS) by the campus deadline of Wednesday, October 15, 2008.
Checklist:
- Cover Sheet
- Application*
- Essay
- Three recommendations
- Copy of your high school transcript
- Grade report or unofficial copy of all transcripts (not the Web version)
*The Goldwater Application is electronic and is available online at www.act.org/goldwater. (Create an account and complete and print a hardcopy of your application to submit. Please do not register your recommenders at this time.)
We strongly recommend that you consult with a faculty member for assistance, both in selecting an issue or problem to discuss and in writing a well-constructed essay. Please be very careful to follow directions on the Nominee's Essay form. The following instruction from the Goldwater Foundation should be of help:
Prepare a carefully thought-out, well-researched response to the essay question. The essay topic should directly relate to the student's area of academic study and should represent an area where the student's knowledge is notable. Many students cite actual research experience in which they are or have been involved. In addition to actual experiences, evidence of additional investigation into the study of the topic must be demonstrated.
Candidates will be e-mailed to let them know whether or not they are invited to interview with the committee. Interviews usually take place in late October. Up to four nominees may be selected by the college committee. Questions concerning the application process should be addressed to Ellie Perkins.
