Chinese Study Abroad

 

There are many opportunities for Wellesley students to study Chinese abroad.

Wellesley Summer Intensive Program in China (MSF approved for summer study)

What: In some years, the Chinese Program offers an intensive four-week summer program in Shanghai, China. Any student who has completed two years of Chinese language training at Wellesley College may apply. The program focuses on intermediate level spoken Mandarin and cultural understanding. Small group classes are taught collaboratively by Wellesley College faculty and local college faculty, supplemented by one-to-one tutorials. Special lectures and weekend group trips to historic and cultural sites are arranged.

CET - Beijing Chinese Language Program (MSF approved for summer study)

What: Based in one of China's most dynamic cities (and the home of "standard" Chinese), the CET Beijing program immerses students in local Chinese life. Students have the opportunity to live with Chinese roommates from local universities and enroll in innovative language courses that challenge their skills both inside and outside the classroom. The program’s unique activities further capitalize on Beijing's rich learning environment and show students a side of China not seen by tourists. Beginning Chinese is available.

CET - Harbin

What: Open to qualified students who have had a minimum of two years of college-level Chinese or the equivalent, the CET Chinese Language Program in Harbin is designed specifically for high intermediate and advanced. In addition to attending small language classes, students help design their own Chinese tutorials, conducted as private sessions between each student and his/her professor. This individualized attention makes it possible for advanced students with varying levels of fluency to significantly improve their own proficiency in a specific area of interest.

CET - C.V. Starr-Middlebury School in China

What: The Middlebury School in China is a unique immersion program designed specifically to provide advanced- intermediate and advanced students the kind of challenge and flexibility they need. Students follow an individualized curriculum, including a one-on-one tutorial, in part designed by the student, and a specialized drill session with one other student and one instructor. Students live with a Chinese roommate. The program requires that students speak Chinese at all times. Applicants must have completed a minimum of two years of college-level Chinese. Five semesters of Chinese are preferred. Students considered in need of further preparation before enrolling in the School in China may be required to enroll in the 9-week Chinese School summer session on the Middlebury campus. All students are expected to enroll in a Chinese course the semester preceding the term or year abroad.
Where: The Middlebury School in China operates on three campuses: Zhejiang University of Technology, in Hangzhou; Yunnan University, in Kunming; and Capitol Normal University, in Beijing (all in the PRC)

Princeton-in-Beijing (MSF approved for summer study)

What: Princeton-in-Beijing is an intensive summer program in intermediate and advanced Chinese language for the serious language student. The program's "total immersion" approach includes: a student pledge to speak no language other than Mandarin Chinese throughout the session; individual tutorial sessions in the afternoons; contact with faculty at meals and in campus life; and special lectures on aspects of China studies. Requires at least one year of Chinese.

Harvard-Beijing Academy – The Harvard Summer Program in Beijing

What: This intensive program gives Chinese language students the opportunity to explore the rich historic city of Beijing while participating in intensive language instruction. The program offers four intensive courses in modern Chinese at the intermediate and advanced levels, as well as a one-week social study project. The language training is embedded in the Chinese setting, with speakers from many sectors of Chinese society joining the participants to discuss their lives. Students have 4 hours of class in the morning (2 hours of instruction and 2 hours of drills) and a 45-minute one-on-one conversation session with one of the faculty in the afternoon. The rest of the afternoon is open for study and extracurricular activities in Chinese. On weekends there are performances, trips and excursions to historic and cultural sites and lectures by guest speakers from various strata of Chinese society. Students also spend time with host families to experience the daily lives and customs of Chinese families.

Associated Colleges in China (ACC) (MSF approved for summer study)

What: The ACC curriculum focuses on studying the Chinese language through individualized instruction with a high level of participation and interaction. The curriculum is designed so that the material taught in the classroom can be used outside of the classroom. Students are encouraged to interact with local Chinese citizens in order to increase their understanding of Chinese culture and society and to practice language skills learned in the classroom. ACC is a language-intensive program with an extremely rigorous schedule. Students should expect to spend most of their time with the program attending classes, completing assignments, and studying. Strict attendance policies and the language pledge are upheld by professors and by the Field Director. Students should have at least two years of college Chinese prior to arriving in Beijing; in some circumstances exceptional students with only one year of prior study may be admitted.

The Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies at Tsinghua University (IUP) (MSF approved for summer study)

What: The Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies (IUP), formerly known as the 'Stanford Center', is now located in Beijing on the campus of Tsinghua (Qinghua) University. IUP was originally established in Taipei, Taiwan in 1963 and in 1997 relocated to its current site in Beijing. IUP's mission is to raise students' Chinese language proficiency to a level at which they can function independently in professional or academic careers. Prerequisites for IUP's admissions committee to review an application included the equivalent of two academic years of college-level Mandarin.

International Chinese Language Program (ICLP) (MSF approved for summer study)

What: ICLP enables students to achieve broad and independent competence in spoken Chinese and to develop reading skills needed for academic research or other professional use. The language center has an audio-visual room, reference library and computer lab with full Internet access for the use of students. Located on the campus of National Taiwan University (NTU), it enjoys the benefits of a central location in Taipei along with access to the full range of NTU's resources.

Mandarin Training Center (MSF approved for summer study)

What: The Mandarin Training Center (MTC) is located at National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei, Taiwan. CCLC operates on a quarter basis, with new classes at all levels of instruction offered at the beginning of each period of study. A two-month Summer Session is also offered.
