This conference, co-sponsored by the American Studies program, other departments and programs, numerous student organizations, and the Wellesley College administration, aims to explore the current state of ethnic studies inside and outside the academy. Bringing together academics and activistsfrom across the U.S., students, the slam poet Joshua Bennett, and the Asian American comedy troupe dis/orient/ed, this conference will feature both performances and roundtables at which we will discuss the research currently being done in various fields of ethnic and gender/sexuality studies, as well as questions concerning the institutionalization and politics of ethnic studies. The goal is to learn about current directions in this broad field, and to think about what alliances and strategies are productive both in theory and in practice.
