Journey to Orissa: Odissi dance & music

Indian Odissi music and dance performance with Mouli Pal and visiting live musicians

Saturday, October 5, 2013 - 7:30pm
Location: Jewett Art Center Auditorium

This concert features an ensemble of musicians, vocalists and dancers, playing the music of Odissi, which is rarely if ever performed live in the United States. Highlighting the interaction of the dancer and musicians in invocations and pure dance pieces, the lyrical music is supported by an intricate rhythm pattern of exceptional beauty. Like the blossoming of a flower, the music gradually unfolds the particular Raaga creating an intricate tapestry of rhythm and melody.

The expressional dances depict a deep emotion through a song and story, a rhyme of eternal love and supreme devotion, and a symbolic representation of the love of Krishna and Radha. With lyrical choreography a mood of romance and tragedy is created, followed by a fast paced dance of ecstasy and joy.

Featuring leading artists who have trained in their respective fields for numerous years, including Upasana director Mouli Pal, New Mexico based percussionist Phillip Hollenbeck on the Mardala and leading New England Hindustani Classical singer Ujjawal Parikh.
