SD Holman is a photo-based artist and Artistic Director of The Queen Arts Festival, a professional three-week, transdisciplinary arts festival in Vancouver, Canada. Holman defines as a non-commercial artist, a participant observer employing subjective conceptual documentary practice. Holman's approach to photography is conflicted and perverse, bringing gesture, hazard, and a painterly sensibility into this most technical of media.
BUTCH: Not like the other girls is a photographic collection that debuted as a public art exhibit displayed in 20 bus shelters across Vancouver. Beginning this September in the Jewett Sculpture Gallery explore the exhibit firsthand. Through photography discover the space occupied by female masculinity. Butch is an inclusive site of resistance to limitations on the way women, gender, and sexuality are still defined. The images honor the mercurial beauty, power and diversity of women who transgress the gender binary celebrating the transversal dialectic of female masculinity.
This event is organized by LGBTQ Programs and Services as part of LGBTQ History Month, and is generously supported by The Wilson Fund.
