"reveal" Dance Performance
by Rashaun Mitchell and Silas Riener
Throughout the fall semester at Wellesley, former Merce Cunningham dancers and Bessie Award winners Rashaun Mitchell and Silas Riener will create a series of works, research, and encounters that exist in the intersections of the natural world, the built environment, and fictional, hypothetical, fantasy space.Their time will be punctuated by interactions with faculty and guest artists, workshops with students, and site-specific demonstrations in an attempt to animate the campus and expand ideas of transformation of space, transformation of self. How can the dancing body as a tangible location for social and cultural negotiation, action, and accumulation of subjectivity be in dialogue with its own site, context, and geography? How does the act of performance create and expose a natural or unnatural, visual or visceral language for this information?
On October 19th, there will be an outdoor performance in the Academic Quad featuring Silas Riener, Rashaun Mitchell and Cori Kresge, with costumes by Silas Riener, Julia Donaldson and Yvette Helin.
The semester opening reception at the Newhouse Center will follow the event.
