The German Department warmly congratulates Alice Choe '13 (Philosophy; German, minor) on her selection for a 2013-2014 Watson Fellowship. The Thomas J. Watson Fellowship is  a grant that funds a year of independent study and travel outside of the United States. Each year, 40 fellowships are awarded from a pool of approximately 150 nominees from the 40 participating schools.

In her Watson proposal, “Domestic Violence Across Cultures,” Alice seeks to travel to Jordan, India, East Timor and Thailand to speak with victims of and advocates against domestic violence. “Traveling to these four countries,” said Choe, “will help me understand what motivates women in different cultures to pursue different agencies as a means of escaping an abusive relationship.” She is interested in exploring the intersection of legal systems, religious beliefs and social norms in the countries she visits. We are proud of our students. In addition to their hard work in courses from Beginning German to the Seminar, many of our students are participating in the life of the department, in the German Corridor, the German Club, and our Study Abroad Programs. They are also involved in German theatre productions.

A significant number of our graduates have received Fulbright, German Academic Exchange Service, and Rotary scholarships for study in German directly after graduation. Wellesley College ranked number 1 among U.S. Colleges for Fulbright awards in 2004-2005, with a significant number of these students having studied German and/or being bound for Germany or Austria with their Fulbright awards. One of our recent graduates won a British Marshall Fellowship.
