2011-2012 Year in Review for German Club, by Faa MacDonald
This year’s German club (2011-2012) has been the most successful and active year yet! This year we have tried our best to collaborate with more organizations on and off campus as well as create a plethora of events in which everyone would enjoy.
We kicked off the year with our first annual Film Series with Goodbye Lenin followed by Das Leben der Andere and finished off the series in December with a viewing of Joyeux Noël at the French House. This event at the French House was combined with cooking German food such as sauerkraut and sausages and baking French goodies. We had a great turnout and it attracted both French and German students.
We held our Oktoberfest at Punch’s Alley and invited different institutions to our event. We had representation from Olin college, MIT, and Tufts University. We received lots of funding from SOFC for this event so we were able to provide sausages, pickles, brötchen, apple cider and of course beer (+21 only) for all guests. Individuals 21 or older who purchased a Bierstein ($15) received a free Bierstein of beer of their choice from Punch’s Alley.
We followed this event with a NYC Overnight Trip where we stayed at the Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan. The following day we went to the Heidelberg restaurant and the Metropolitan Museum of Art where we saw an exhibit on European satire. Overall this trip was enjoyable but hectic at the same time and we certainly hope to continue doing an overnight trip at least once per academic year.
We invited both Professor Kruse and Professor Hans to speak about their research projects. Professor Kruse’s lecture: E-reading Kafka: Using and Producing E-notated Editions in the Classroom informed the club of the process used to e-notate a work of literature and how useful this technology can be for both students and faculty. For Professor Hans’s lecture: Vampires, Victims and Disembodied Voices: Image and Sound in Dreyer’s ‘Vampyr.’ we collaborated with the TZE house and had a wonderful lunch and discussed the use of sound and imagery in Dreyer’s terrifying, yet fascinating film.
Last semester we established close relations with the Boston College German club and they have since invited us to a German club Glühwein party as well as their “Berlin Fall of the Wall” celebration. This semester we continued collaborating with both BC and French house and had a Faschingsparty in February at the French house on campus. This was a great success and we were able to provide fried dough, sweets, and other finger food to all guests.
On Saturday, April 14th at 3pm we had our German club soccer, sausages, and s’mores event by firepit at the Lulu Chow Wang. We held our “Cook and Speak Like an Austrian” event where we made Knödel and cookies on Friday, April 20th right after our German club meeting in Homestead house.
German club helped the department at the end of the year party on May 8th at 5pm. German club will be providing S’mores supplies provided by the Wellesley College S’mores Endowment.
We would really like to thank all the German Department Professors for the wonderful support they have all given us throughout the year as well as the French house, the Boston College German club, Punch’s Alley, WZLY and TZE for the opportunity to collaborate with them. I would like to thank all the German club eboard members and general members for their hard work this past academic year.
Congratulations to our next year’s eboard: co-Presidents Emily Bell ’13 and Denisse Ruiz ’13, co-VPs Katja Bego ’14 and Elizabeth Silvers ’14, Tresurer Teresa Wisner ’13, and Lecture Chair Hannah Harris ‘15
