Placement Exams

Students can place out of either 100-level or 200-level language courses by performance on a placement exam.

You can do this online at your convenience, before the beginning of the Fall or Spring semester. Even if you are not yet on campus, Wellesley College’s honor code applies.

Which Exam to Take

If you have studied Italian for a few years in high school, but have not taken the Italian Advanced Placement (AP) test, or if you have taken previous college-level Italian language courses, we suggest you take Exemption Exam 1 or 2.

If you have taken the Italian AP test in high school and your test score was 3 or 4, we suggest you take Exemption Exam 3 or 4.

If you have taken the Italian AP test in high school and your test score was 5, you automatically place out of our 4th semester Italian 202, and you can move onto the higher 200 level courses.

Once you submit the exam, it will be evaluated by a faculty member from the Department of Italian Studies, and you will be informed about which course would be most suitable for you.
