General information

Visiting the Archives

Hours of operation are 9:00-12:00 and 1:00-4:30, Monday-Friday.

Visitors are asked to contact the Archives prior to visiting, as the Archives is frequently closed during normal hours of operation.

Research use

The Archives are open to all--Wellesley College affiliation is not required.

Archival material must be consulted in the Archives. Materials from the Archives is not loaned. In certain circumstances, a circulating copy of a record can be made. Please contact staff for more information.

A limited number of finding aids or boxlists for collections can be found here. For additional details, contact a staff member. Information about the books and serials in the Archives appears in the Library's on-line catalog.

Research requests received by phone, through the mail, email or by FAX will be handled as time, availability of staff and condition of the material allow.

Class or group use of the collections

Because space in the Archives is limited, classes or other groups which wish to use the collections must contact the Archivist at least two days in advance to arrange the details of such use.

Photocopies or other facsimiles

Selected copies of items in the Archives collections may be made if the items will not be damaged by such copying. We reserve the right to limit the number of copies made for any patron. Individuals requesting copies of materials from the Archives collections will be charged for the cost of producing the copy. They also may be charged a permissions or licensing fee. Please contact staff for more information.

Requests for permission to publish or otherwise distribute copies or other facsimiles of items from Archives collections should be directed to the Archivist.

You may access a limited number of finding aids for processed collections here.

Institutional records

The official records of Wellesley College include inactive (or non-current) records of the president, deans, governing boards, academic departments, and major administrative offices.

Student records

The printed and manuscript records of student life include letters, diaries, scrapbooks and albums generated by individual students during their years at Wellesley; and minutes, reports and memorabilia of student clubs and organizations.

Master's and honors theses written by Wellesley students may be read in the Archives.

Publications

Publications issued by Wellesley College are kept in the Archives. These include the College catalog, newspapers, yearbooks and literary magazines published by students. Other copies of many of these periodicals are on file in the main part of the Library. Check the catalog for their availability.

Papers of Individuals

These collections document the lives of the women who have been president of Wellesley College. There also are collections of papers of some faculty and alumnae; and a sampling of publications of these individuals.

Alumnae collections

Alumnae collections include records of the Wellesley College Alumnae Association; alumnae magazine; biographical files; and information on alumnae clubs and activities.

Audiovisual collections

Photographs, slides, and drawings show Wellesley faculty, staff and students; student life; campus scenes and Wellesley College events. Motion pictures, audio and videotapes record conferences and other major College events. They also were used to introduce the College to potential students and others. A small oral history collection captures reminiscences of alumnae and Wellesley College officials.
